Jalena Ruby Brooks serves as Assistant Director for the Civic Programs of the Detroit Children's Choir.
Jalena is a native of Detroit and is passionate about teaching music to all ages. Growing up, Jalena was greatly involved in the arts. She attended Detroit Windsor Dance Academy for 8 years, where she learned jazz, tap and ballet and participated in her church choir and school music program. She is a product of Detroit Public Schools and graduated from Renaissance High School with honors in 2008. Jalena then went on to the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor where she received her BA in Music Education, focusing on vocal music. During her time at U of M, Jalena gained many musical experiences, singing with the University Choir and Orpheus Singers. She also was a member of the Michigan Gospel Chorale and Black Arts Council. After graduating cum laude in 2012, she accepted her first teaching job in West Bloomfield School District as an elementary music teacher. Though Jalena enjoyed teaching in West Bloomfield, she decided yo return to Detroit to begin a new music program at University Yes Academy. She has been working in urban education since the fall of 2013 and is passionate about teaching her students life skills through music. While teaching, Jalena also interns with My Own Planet record label as a sound engineer and directs of the Young Adult Choir at River Rouge Bible Assembly.
