DCC Civic Choirs

The Detroit Children’s Choir, in partnership with the DSO, is offering four auditioned children’s choir ensembles and one training choir housed at the iconic Orchestra Hall. The Civic Choirs performance calendar includes multiple performances on the world-famous Orchestra Hall stage as well as opportunities to participate in multiple tours throughout the season. All choirs will participate in portions of the DCC Holiday Tour (December) as well as the “I’ll Make The Difference” Tour (February). In addition, the Civic Choirs will have their own sets and features during the Annual Spring Concert in May. 

New for 2017–2018, the Detroit Symphony Youth Chorale and Singers in the D will participate in their first spring tour of the Midwest, with possible performances in Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Chicago. More information to come as venues and dates are announced (Summer 2018).


Detroit Symphony Youth Chorale [Grades 9 - 12]

In collaboration with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Wu Family Academy, The Wu Family Academy is proud to announce the development of a new youth chorus as one of its Civic Youth Ensembles beginning the 2017-2018 season!

New for the 2017 - 2018 Season, the Detroit Symphony Youth Chorale (DSYC) will be open to high school chorus singers by audition only and will perform advanced literature with opportunities to learn from professional singers, participate in master classes, work with orchestras and other music ensembles, and perform on historic Orchestra Hall Stage! Sight-reading skills and a healthy vocal technique are required for participation in this ensemble.

DSYC is a new collaborative effort between the Detroit Children’s Choir (DCC) and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO). Eric Taylor, Artistic Manager of the DCC, has been appointed by the DSO to serve as Conductor of this ensemble.

Singers in the D [Grades 6 - 12]

Singers in the D is the premiere touring ensemble for our organization, and it is open to students in Grades 6 – 12. Participation in this highly selective ensemble requires an advanced understanding of music notation producing sight-singing skill and ability to sing in tune with healthy vocal technique. Students will experience a Kodály-inspired curriculum, develop their independent sight-reading, theory, and performance skills, with increasingly challenging repertoire in a variety of languages and genres, in three-and four-parts.

Men’s Chorus [Grades 6 - 12]

New for the 2017 - 2018 Season, the Men’s Chorus is DCC's auditioned male choir, open to men in Grades 6 - 12. Participation in this intermediate ensemble requires a basic understanding of music notation producing sight-singing skill and ability to sing in tune with healthy vocal technique. Students will experience a Kodály-inspired curriculum, learning sight-reading, theory, and performance skills, with increasingly challenging repertoire in a variety of languages and genres, in three-and four-parts.

Concert Chorale [Grades 3 - 12]

The Concert Chorale is DCC's auditioned treble choir, open to treble and unchanged voices (boys and girls) in Grades 3 – 12. Participation in this intermediate ensemble requires a basic understanding of music notation producing sight-singing skill and ability to sing in tune with healthy vocal technique. Students will experience a Kodály-inspired curriculum, learning sight-reading, theory, and performance skills, with increasingly challenging repertoire in a variety of languages and genres, in three-and four-parts.

Midtown Chorale - [Grades 3 - 8]

The Midtown Chorale is our training choir to develop the skills needed for our auditioned choirs. The Chorale bring the power and discipline of quality choral music education into the community as a vehicle to help children develop excellence in musicianship, self-confidence, social awareness and academic skills while setting the stage for continued active involvement in choral singing throughout their lives.  Students are provided a Kodály-inspired choral music education program, developing basic music literacy through fun and engaging activities, sight-singing, healthy vocal technique training, pitch accuracy and part singing skills.
